March 14, 2011 Mazon River

Mazon, Vermillion, Illinois, Rock, Galena, Apple, Kish, Mississippi and everything that flows into them. If any one gets more posts than the others, I'll give it it's own forum.

The blog is still under construction and needs a ton of work yet, but I figured I'd finally get something going.

Can you share where you started? I was thinking of going tomorrow and have never
fished it.

John, the most easily accessible spot I know is on White Tie Road where the river runs closest to it. It's just a pull off on the road, nothing fancy. Have to wade though unless you want to roll your boat down the hill.

Boat wise, you can launch across from the mouth on the Illinois River in Morris. Don't know anyone that has fished that initial stretch, but I would imagine the fish are there. I know on one section there is a little knee dam you have to portage around, but I hear it's no big deal.

It's now called the Morris Wetlands. It's been opened to fishing the last few years. The linked map will show a road that goes through it, but I've never gone to check it out. Might just be a hiking path.

What kind of boat? There's a lot of really, really shallow stretches in there, and some absolutely massive boulders, so I'm thinking anything with a motor would be a really bad idea. A Kayak would probably be awesome, as there are some really steep cut banks and deep stretches in there. White Tie road is the best access, as Ken mentioned.
