They are all Asian Carp

Post by Ken G »

It gets tiring reading about the invasion of the Asian Carp when they are all Asian Carp. Since some were introduced in the last 40 or so years, those are the ones called "Asian" right now.

Silver Carp are the only ones that jump.

Of course I didn't book mark it and now I can't find it. I read an article a few months ago on how these carp won't reproduce well in the lake. They need current to reproduce and carry the eggs. The eggs free float in the current till they hatch. Can't do that in the lake. Damn I wish I could find that.

And speaking of invasive species in the Great Lakes. . . Every year hundreds of thousands of invasive trout and salmon are dumped into the lakes and called game fish. If anyone has ever fished in one of the harbors soon after trout smolt were dumped in, these things are like piranha. You can't keep them off your hook and they eat everything in sight. Worse than gobi. I used to toss them up on shore just like the gobi. Everyone bemoans the decline of the perch fishery and blames the commercial fishing of them. I blame trout and salmon. The perch eggs and fry don't stand a chance against them.

You shouldn't get to pick and choose what's a good invasive species and what's not.
